This is advice from the Department.This advice covers Assessment and Reporting Arrangements (ARA) on all aspects of National Curriculum assessment and reporting for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
It also provides information and guidance on EYFS profile assessments and their administration and moderation including, access arrangements and reporting pupils’ achievements to parents.

Who is this advice for?
This advice is for:
- headteachers;
- local authorities;
- academies and Free Schools;
- independent schools; and
- Ofsted registered foundation years providers.
Key points
- the ARA provides advice on the responsibilities of all foundation years education providers and education professionals with responsibility for assessing, reporting or moderating EYFS profiles;
- all EYFS providers, including maintained schools, non-maintained schools, independent schools, children’s centres, Free Schools, academies and childcare providers registered by Ofsted on the Early Years register, where the child spends the majority of their time between 8.00am and 6.00pm, must complete the EYFS profile assessment; and
- all foundation years providers must complete an EYFS profile for each child during the academic year they reach the age of five (for most children this is the Reception Year in primary school). The EYFS profile is intended to provide parents and carers, practitioners and teachers with a well-rounded picture of the child’s development. It is also intended to help Year 1 teachers to plan an effective and appropriate curriculum for a smooth transition to Key Stage 1.
