The Secretary of State for Education announced on 2nd June 2010 his intention to seek Parliament’s approval to abolish the General Teaching Council for England (GTCE) who currently act as the regulator for the teaching profession. The Education Bill, which is currently before Parliament, makes provision to abolish the GTCE and gives responsibility to the Secretary of State to operate a new streamlined regulation system for teachers in England.
This new system of regulation, which will deal with cases of serious misconduct, will take effect from 1st April 2012. We are now looking to appoint serving or recently serving school teachers and lay members to sit on, and in some cases chair, the newly formed professional conduct panels.
