The Department is committed to developing policies that raise attainment for all children and close the gap between those facing disadvantage and their peers.

Under the Equality Act 2010 the Department has a legal duty to publish information to demonstrate compliance with Public Sector Equality Duty of that Act; and the objectives through which we plan to foster fairness.

The Department is:

  • thinking about equalities as we develop policy, and acting on that thinking;
  • conscious of the need for our policy to be informed by equalities evidence, and collecting that evidence, and using it;
  • involved in effective practice in promoting equality, and engaging with communities in effective ways.

Fairness objectives

Department fairness objectives and an introduction to these can be found in the associated resources section of this page. The objectives show where we think we need to do more to promote equality for different groups of people in the education system. The introduction notes the evidence we looked at to help us to set the objectives.

Fairness in policy making

The equality section of this site contains information about analyses that have been carried out since May 2010. These equality analyses provide information on the actions the department is taking. The page will be updated as more assessments are published.

Data

Information updated for April 2012 about some of the research and statistics the Department has carried out and collected can be found in the associated resources section of this page. The research and statistics show the impact policies are having and how they promote equality.

This section shows how some of the objectives from the current Single Equality Scheme (SES), e.g. evidence on attainment and on exclusions, are being delivered. These objectives remain the Department's priorities for action to foster fairness until we publish our new set of equality objectives.
