Cadet forces are youth organisations committed to preparing young people for active involvement in community life. Sponsored by the Ministry of Defence (MOD), they use military themes to foster confidence, initiative, self reliance and a sense of service to others. In this section you will find information about the role of cadet forces in the UK, including details of the different types of cadet force and related facts and figures.

The Department, alongside MOD, is supporting 12 partnerships between independent and state schools in London. This is a pilot exploring whether the partnership approach will increase the number of young people from state schools participating in cadet forces. Details of the partnerships can be found in the ISSP section.
