On 30 June 2012, the Prime Minister announced the expansion of cadet forces. By 2015, up to 100 more state-funded schools will be able to develop cadet units.
Cadet Forces are one of the largest youth organisations in the UK aimed at young people between the ages of 10 and 20. Through a broad range of exciting and challenging activities, they help prepare young people for active involvement in community life. Their military ethos helps foster confidence, initiative, self-reliance and a sense of service to others.
Schools that have set up cadet units have seen significant benefits for their young people, their schools and the local community. Students learn self-discipline, resilience and leadership skills, but also develop a sense of community and teamwork. These skills have a positive impact on their educational attainment.
Extending the scheme in state schools will allow more young people to benefit from the life-changing opportunities that cadet forces offer – helping them develop into well-rounded, accomplished adults fully prepared for life beyond school.
