Funding for employment-based teacher training

The School Direct (salaried) programme is an on-the-job programme that allows you to qualify as a teacher and pays a salary while you work.

You will be employed by a school, earn a salary, and work towards qualified teacher status (QTS) all at the same time. The School Direct Training Programme (salaried) is a great employment-based route, open to graduates with at least three years' work experience. However, schools can decide to accept applications from candidates with less work experience to attract high-quality candidates in hard-to-fill subjects, such as maths and physics.

As a trainee on this route, you must be employed in a maintained school for the duration of your training. The financial support you receive is the salary from your school, which is at least the minimum point on the unqualified teacher pay ranges. Depending on your responsibilities, experience and location, your school may pay you more. You won't pay any tuition fees, but you may need to pay for a qualificiation such as a PGCE, if awarded.
