Post-ITT subject knowledge enhancement

For the past two years, the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) has funded Higher Education Institute (HEI) providers to deliver post-initial teacher training (ITT) subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) courses. These courses are designed to increase the knowledge of in-service teachers that did not train in the subject they teach. SKE courses cover maths, chemistry, physics, or modern languages.

NCTL funding to HEIs stopped at the end of financial year 2013-14, and post-ITT SKE courses needed to have started on or before 31st March 2014 to be NCTL funded.

The opportunity remains for teachers and schools to purchase courses from HEIs to meet their professional development needs.

For the financial year 2014-15, the NCTL is running a grant-funded test and learn project with a small group of Teaching School Alliances (TSAs) to develop and deliver a range of cross-phase post-ITT SKE provision in shortage subjects, to meet local and regional capacity needs. Successful TSAs will begin development in June, with implementation from September 2014. This new delivery approach supports the NCTL vision of enabling and encouraging the development of a self-improving, school-led system, and puts schools at the centre of decision making to meet their workforce needs.
