Post-initial teacher training (ITT) subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) courses are designed to increase the mathematics, chemistry, physics, or modern languages knowledge of in-service and returning teachers.
The post-ITT SKE courses ran as a pilot scheme throughout the academic year 2011/12. Following the success of the pilot, the courses have been expanded and will now include modern languages, as well as mathematics, physics and chemistry.
Eligibility
Before you apply for a place on one of the courses, you need to check that you meet the eligibility criteria. To enrol on a post-ITT SKE course, you must be one of the following:
- Qualified teacher status (QTS) holder currently employed in a school as a teacher – you would not have been trained in maths, physics, chemistry or the language specific to the proposed SKE
- QTS holder intending to return to teaching who does not have an ITT specialism in the subject they wish to teach and is converting to a maths, physics, chemistry or language specialism. To be eligible for conversion you will have experience of teaching a related subject or have a degree qualification which has a significant element of maths, physics, chemistry or languages
- QTS holder intending to return to teaching who has an ITT specialism in the subject they wish to teach, but has been out of teaching for an extended period (usually more than 3 years) and is looking to enhance their existing maths, physics or chemistry knowledge
