All teacher training programmes are designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge you will need to teach successfully.
Initial teacher training (ITT) programmes focus on a number of themes, linked to the qualified teacher status (QTS) standards. Whatever programme you choose, your ITT will involve:
- a knowledge and understanding of the relevant national curriculum programmes of study for your subjects
- planning and preparing lessons and setting learning objectives
- managing classes, promoting good behaviour and minimising disruptions
- using information and communication technology effectively
- awareness of the professional values expected of teachers, in their attitudes and behaviour towards pupils and colleagues
Most trainee teachers (except for those on employment-based or assessment only routes) divide their time between a university or other higher education institutions and a school, where they will undertake supervised teaching practice.
