If you are an experienced teacher with a degree, you can apply for a place on an assessment route to qualified teacher status (QTS).

Assessment Only (AO) route

Please note that the Assessment Only (AO) route to QTS is expanding from 2012/13. This page will be updated once further details are available.

The AO route allows you to demonstrate that you already meet all of the standards for QTS, without the need for any further training. You will need to present detailed evidence, and your teaching will be assessed in a school by an accredited and approved provider. You must also take the professional skills tests in literacy and numeracy before you can be recommended for QTS.

The AO requirements and supporting advice are available from the AO guidance (PDF, 358KB)

Individual AO providers may impose additional entry criteria.

How to apply

If you would like to apply for the AO route, you can apply directly to an approved provider

A full, updated list of approved providers for 2012/13 will be made available soon.

Assessment-based route to QTS

If you have substantial experience of working in a UK school as an instructor, unqualified teacher, or as a teacher in an independent school or further education institution, you may be able to qualify for QTS with minimal teacher training.

The University of Gloucestershire administers this process for England. It is currently closed for applications, other than to teachers of maths, physics, modern foreign languages (MFL), and information and communication technology (ICT).

If you are interested in applying for the QTS assessment-based training option, please contact the University of Gloucestershire School of Education directly.
