GovernorLine is the professional helpline offering telephone support to school governors, clerks and individuals involved directly with issues of school governance in England.

GovernorLine practice terms and conditions
We offer free and independent information and support on education law and recognised good practice within maintained schools in England.

The service is completely confidential between caller and adviser.

All calls are logged and key issues recorded to allow the creation of information which can inform policy and help in developing training and guidance for school governors.

GovernorLine can help ensure that governors:

  • understand the principles of fairness, equality and recognised good practice
  • promote positive and constructive industrial relations
  • adhere to sound and effective employment practices and procedures
  • are aware of, and follow correctly at all times, procedures laid down for their own school
  • better understand the role of trades unions in schools
  • are empowered to make objective decisions based on the facts of a situation.

Please note that we can only give advice directly to an individual governor, who may, of course, call on behalf on an entire governing body. We cannot give advice to consultants instructed to act on behalf of a board of governors.

The opinions expressed by the GovernorLine advisory team are based solely on the information and facts which have been provided to them by callers. GovernorLine cannot accept liability for any third party losses or actions caused by the reliance on the advice given by the GovernorLine team.

Whilst every effort is made to ensure that the information contained on this site is accurate and up to date, GovernorLine users should take appropriate steps to verify such information before taking action.
