National Summary

Teaching Assistants - in 2010 there were 123,880 teaching assistants in maintained Primary schools up from 95,460 in 2005. In 2010 there were 43,610 teaching assistants in maintained Secondary schools up from 30,220 in 2005.

Other Support Staff - in 2010 there were 61,880 full time equivalent other support staff in maintained Primary schools up from 45,880 in 2005. In 2009 there were 93,850 full time equivalent other support staff in maintained Secondary schools up from 63,960 in 2005.

Numbers of Teachers - in 2010 there were 186,210 full time equivalent qualified teachers in maintained Primary schools up from 180,630 in 2005. In maintained Secondary schools there were 208,130 full time equivalent qualified teachers in 2010 up from 200,160 in 2005.

Pupil Teacher Ratios - in 2010 the pupil : teacher ratio for Maintained Primary Schools was 21.3 down from 22.5 in 2005. For Maintained Secondary Schools the pupil : teacher ratio in 2010 was 15.6 down from 16.7 in 2005.

The average salary of full-time regular qualified teachers, in local authority maintained nursery, primary, secondary, special schools and pupil referral units in 2009 was £36,820 up from £32,890 in 2005.
