Scope and Purpose
Academies are publicly funded independent schools, free from local authority and national government control. Other freedoms include setting their own pay and conditions for staff, freedoms concerning the delivery of the curriculum, and the ability to change the length of their terms and school days.

Academy Sponsor Led - Academies are all-ability, state-funded schools established and managed by sponsors from a wide range of backgrounds, including high performing schools and colleges, universities, individual philanthropists, businesses, the voluntary sector, and faith communities.

Academy Convertors - All schools that have chosen through Governing Body Resolution and application to the Secretary of State to become an Academy under the academies Act 2010.

Geographic Referencing
Local Authority (LA) and Government Office Region (GOR) - Each Academy was allocated to it's administrative LA and GOR using the LA element of the individual Academies establishment number.

Ward, Local Authority and Parliamentary Constituency - Geographic Referencing was carried out by the DfE using reference data provided by the Office for National Statistics. Each school was allocated to a 2003 Census Area Statistics (CAS) Ward, local/unitary authority and Government Office Region (GOR) using its postcode.
