National Summary

Revised figures for 2012 show that 81.8 per cent of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 achieved 5 or more GCSE and equivalents at grades A*-C up from 56.3 per cent in 2005. Revised figures for 2012 show that 94.0 per cent of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 achieved 5 or more GCSE and equivalents at grades A*-G up from 89.0 per cent in 2005.

In 2011/12 the percentage of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 achieving 5 or more A* - C grades at GCSE and equivalent including English and Mathematics was 59.4 per cent (revised), up from 42.6 per cent in 2004/05.

From 2006 figures provide information about the exam achievements of pupils at the end of Key Stage 4.

The 2009 parliamentary constituency data is based on final data, all other 2009 data is based on revised data.

Administrative / Methodological Procedures
Concepts and Definitions
The GCSE figures include results in GCSEs and from 2004 results in a range of other approved qualifications are incorporated.

From 2006 figures are for those pupils at the end of Key Stage 4.

(p) = Provisional data
(r) = Revised data
x = Suppressed data

Data Classifications
Edit and Imputation Procedures
Validation and Quality Assurance
Performance data received from the Awarding Bodies is combined for each pupil by the Department's contractor - numerous checks are carried out on this data by the Department and the contractor. This data is then combined for each school by another contractor, at which point another set of checks are carried out by the Department and the contractor. The data is then sent out to schools to check their figures and submitted to a further set of validations and checks before publication in the Performance Tables.
Geographic Referencing
LA - Each record was allocated to it's administrative LA using the LA element of the individual schools establishment number.

Ward, Local Authority District and GOR - Geographic Referencing was carried out by the DfE using reference data provided by the Office for National Statistics. Each record was allocated to a 2003 Census Area Statistics (CAS) Ward, Local Authority District (LAD) and Government Office Region (GOR) using its postcode.
