Frequently asked questions for NPQH
Why should I do the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) if it is no longer a mandatory requirement?
Evaluation evidence from trainee heads who have completed the programme demonstrates that NPQH remains a high-quality leadership development programme that has direct impact on the individual, the school in which they work and their pupils.
99 per cent of trainee heads who have participated in NPQH say, " I have improved my work practices as a result of going on the programme" and 98 per cent believe "There has been a positive impact for children and families from going on the programme".
How do I defer or withdraw from the programme? Will I be charged?
Once you’ve been accepted onto NPQH and have undertaken the induction event, you may defer in exceptional circumstances only. If you decide to withdraw, you may be required to pay for the time you’ve been on the programme. Should you wish to discuss this, please contact your licensee.
I work in a British international school. Is it possible to participate in NPQH without travelling to England?
At present, you will need to travel to the UK to undertake:
- a gateway assessment (start of the programme)
- a school-based placement
- two days per module with the licensee
- a final assessment (graduation)
However, we are currently trialling the delivery of NPQH by distance learning to overseas participants. We will share the outcomes once the trial has been completed in 2013.
Can I apply for NPQH without qualified teacher status (QTS)?
You do not need QTS to undertake NPQH.
How do I apply for a scholarship?
When you apply, you will automatically be assessed for a scholarship based on the information you complete during registration for the programme. If you are successful, we will write to you confirming your scholarship. See our costs page for information about eligibility.
My NPQH application has not been successful. Can I appeal against this decision?
Please see our appeals page for guidance on how to appeal against a decision.
What part do sponsors play in NPQH?
Sponsors play an important part in your development. They are required to mentor you through the programme and to support and validate your application. Find out more about the sponsor's role.
How long will each module take to complete?
Each module will take approximately 50 hours to complete.
Will completion of NPQH provide credit accumulation and transfer scheme (CATS) points?
Most licensees are working with a higher education institution (HEI) that will be happy to award CATS points towards a Master's with them. However, the points awarded may vary depending upon the HEI you approach.
Can I use my CATS points towards NPQH?
The National College is not an awarding body and NPQH, although written at Master’s level, is a standalone qualification. Whilst you won’t be able to use your degree as CATS points towards the qualification, the learning you have from your degree will help you in the completion of the modules.
The examples I want to use for my application form are not from my current role, as I have recently moved school. Can I still use them?
Examples from a previous role can be used as long as they are still relevant and within the last three years. You will need your sponsor to liaise with your previous line manager (the person who will be able to verify your example) to ensure they can further support your application and confidently undertake the 30-minute sponsor interview if your application is successful.
