The chair of the governing body is pivotal to school improvement. National leaders of governance are highly effective chairs of governors who work with chairs in other schools or academies to support school improvement. As a headteacher you can benefit from this new role in various ways.

Recommending your chair of governors for the programme

If you feel that your chair of governors meets the eligibility criteria you may want to recommend that they apply to become a national leader of governance. Your endorsement will form part of their application.

If they are successful, your school will benefit from the professional development that your chair of governors receives at the training event, and in subsequent deployments.

Your school or academy will receive a small grant that can be used to further develop your governing body, and reimburse the national leader of governance’s expenses.

Getting support from a national leader of governance

If you feel that your chair of governors would benefit from working with a national leader of governance on a particular aspect of the role, you can request their support from the College.

We will consider all requests and will work with you to help define your specific requirement, and arrange for a suitable national leader of governance to support you.
