In England some local authorities (LAs) provide discretionary grants to help with buying school uniforms. LAs that offer these grants set their own criteria for eligibility.
Schools can help limit the expense of uniforms by choosing a colour scheme rather than a full uniform or by ensuring the uniform chosen is widely available in high street shops rather than a sole supplier. There is a new project called 'Horizons – Your Family, Your Future', which has been put together by Citizens Advice, the Family Welfare Association, Parentline Plus and One Parent Families, and is backed by £3 million from Barclaycard. This is available to one-parent families.
