About the indicators

These indicators measure the numbers of academies and Free Schools that have opened nationally and the number of state-funded, mainstream academies and Free Schools as a percentage of total state-funded mainstream schools. These indicators refer only to converter academies and sponsor-led academies.

Why do we measure it?

The Government believes that all schools should become academies or Free Schools which benefit from greater freedoms to innovate, raise standards and to increase the variety of schools in areas where there is demand.
