DCSF: Key Stage 4 Engagement Programme Pilot Evaluation Research Information

DescriptionThe evaluation measured the impact and effectiveness of the Key Stage 4 Engagement Programme pilot particularly in the areas of pupil selection, progress in attitudes to learning; employability skills; attainment; reducing NEET status and continued participation in education and training. Examples of best practice were collated in order to support wider dissemination and to assist roll out. The different ways that schools deliver the programme and how they responded to specific local employability needs was also explored. A multi-method approach was used in 15 case study areas and included detailed fieldwork, repeat visits to partnerships to consult with key stakeholders and to access locally collated evidence and interviews with 250 pupils. Interviews were also held with a sample of parent / carers, teachers, programme co-ordinators, work-based learning providers and employers. A total of 785 pupil surveys were received from 621 pupils. Constraints with capturing precise comparator group data match was unable to record pupils complex needs such as self-esteem issues, behavioural and emotional difficulties and other sensitive issues.
