Permanent Exclusions from Schools and Exclusion Appeals in England 2002/2003 (Provisional)

Description	This publication provides provisional estimates of permanent exclusions from primary, secondary and all special schools in England in the school year 2002/2003. It also contains information on exclusion appeals lodged in that school year. Although there are no national targets for the number of permanent exclusions, the Government wants to keep them to a minimum because exclusion does not only affect those involved, but also the wider community. Excluded young people are more likely to get involved with crime: nearly two thirds of young offenders sentenced in court have been excluded from school or truant significantly. The Government is investing nearly £470 million in measures to improve behaviours and attendance. Analyses on the characteristics of excluded pupils provided in the publication will help to identify and target those in need of extra support as well as monitor the effectiveness of this initiative.
