DCSF: GCSE and Equivalent Results in England, 2007/08 (Revised)

DescriptionThis Statistical First Release updates information published in October 2008 which provided the earliest information on the overall achievements of young people in GCSE and equivalent examinations in 2008. The publication contains revised national level analyses by school type, gender and subject and revised Local Authority (LA) level analyses by gender. The information in this SFR is based on that collated for the 2008 Secondary School (GCSE and equivalents) Achievement and Attainment tables and has now been checked by schools. The Secondary School Achievement and Attainment Tables will be published on 15 January, the day after this SFR.

Summary

National results for pupils at the end of Key Stage 4 in schools
  • 65.3 per cent achieved 5 or more grades A*-C at GCSE or equivalent. This compares to the provisional figure of 64.6 per cent and the 2006/07 figure of 61.4 per cent.
  • 47.6 per cent achieved 5 or more grades A*-C including English and mathematics at GCSE or equivalent. This compares to the provisional figure of 47.2 per cent and is an increase of 1.3 percentage points from 2006/07.
  • 91.6 per cent achieved 5 or more grades A*-G at GCSE or equivalent, up 0.7 percentage points from 2006/07.
  • 87.4 per cent achieved 5 or more grades A*-G including English and mathematics at GCSE or equivalent, this compares to the 2006/07 figure of 87.1 per cent.
  • 98.6 per cent achieved any passes at GCSE or equivalent, up 0.6 percentage points from 2006/07.
  • Girls continue to outperform boys, particularly at the higher grades (A*-C); 69.9 per cent of girls achieved 5 or more grades A*-C compared to 60.9 per cent of boys.
  • In 2007/08, using the Department's definition which is based on attainment rounded to whole numbers for open schools, less than 30 per cent of pupils achieved 5 or more GCSEs at grade A*-C including English and mathematics in 440 schools.
Due to amendments made to the IDACI tables (tables 20-23) on 16 January 2009, the paragraph 'Results in Area Based Initiatives and Deprived Areas' on page 6 of the SFR has also been amended.
