DCSF: Neighbourhood Statistics - Announcement of the release of small area Pupil Absence by Pupil Characteristics in England, 2007/08
| Description | Statistics on Pupil Absence are published as Neighbourhood Statistics - Announcement of the release of small area Pupil Absence by Pupil Characteristics in England 2007/08 and include data from England.
The latest statistics report on the period 2007/08 and update those previously released on 16/07/2008.
The key points from the latest release are:
- The tables reinforce messages in previous publications about patterns of absence and about the relationship between absence and deprivation and absence and pupil characteristics at National, Regional and Local Authority (LA) level. These tables also provide the first opportunity, using 2007/08 data, to report on patterns of absence in small areas by location of educational institution (Middle Layer Super Output Area (MSOA) level) and pupil residency (MSOA level and Lower Layer Super Output Area (LSOA)) level.
- In the 10% most deprived areas, the average total absence per enrolment is 11.6 days, compared to 6.7 days in the 10% least deprived areas. Persistent Absentees (PAs) account for 20.1 per cent of all absences, with PAs resident in the 10% most deprived areas accounting for 4.4 per cent of all absences compared with PAs resident in the 10% least deprived areas who account for 0.6 per cent.
- Resident girls have higher levels of overall absence than resident boys in over 80 per cent of local authority districts of residence. Resident pupils who are known to be eligible for free school meals have higher levels of overall absence in every local authority district except City of London. Among ethnic groups, White pupils have the highest levels of absence in almost 20 per cent of local authority districts.
