The latest national statistics on Key Stage 1 Attainment produced by the Department for Children, Schools and Families were released on 25th August 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics AuthorityUK Statistics Authority

DCSF: National Curriculum Assessments at Key Stage 1 in England, 2009

DescriptionThis Statistical First Release (SFR) provides provisional information on the achievements of eligible pupils (typically 7 year olds) in the 2009 National Curriculum assessments at Key Stage 1 (KS1).

The Key Stage 1 statistics published in this SFR are produced from data provided to the Department by local authorities in August 2009. The figures in this SFR are based on this provisional 2009 data.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • At Level 2 or above:
    • In all subjects a higher proportion of girls than boys reached or exceeded the expected level.

    • Compared to the equivalent final 2008 figures, the overall percentages achieving Level 2 or above remained the same in speaking and listening, reading and science; increased in writing by one percentage point, and decreased in mathematics by one percentage point.

  • At Level 2B or above:
    • In all subjects a higher proportion of girls than boys achieved Level 2B or above.

    • Compared to the equivalent final 2008 figures, the overall percentage achieving Level 2B or above remained the same in mathematics but increased in reading and writing by 1 and 2 percentage points respectively.

  • At Level 3 or above:
    • A higher proportion of girls than boys achieved Level 3 or above in Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing, whilst a higher proportion of boys than girls achieved Level 3 or above in Mathematics and Science.

    • Compared to the equivalent final 2008 figures, the overall percentages achieving Level 3 or above increased by 1 percentage point in reading and remained the same in speaking and listening, writing, mathematics and science.
