DCSF: GCSE Attainment by Pupil Characteristics, in England 2008/09

DescriptionThis Statistical First Release was released on 15 December 2009. The figures for 2008/09 are provisional. The figures for 2007/08 were updated on 18 January.

This Statistical First Release (SFR) was originally released on 15 December and contained figures based on provisional data. It was withdrawn on 5 February following the identification of an error in the underlying database. It has now been re-released with revised data. This revised publication shows:

  • Girls outperformed boys at Key Stage 4 - 54.4 per cent of girls achieved 5 or more A*-C grade GCSEs or equivalent including English and mathematics compared to 47.1 per cent of boys.
  • The highest achieving ethnic group were Chinese, Indian and Mixed White and Asian where 71.6 per cent, 67.0 per cent and 62.3 per cent respectively achieved 5 or more A*-C grade GCSEs or equivalent including English and mathematics.
  • Pupils whose first language was English performed better at the end of Key Stage 4 than pupils for whom English is an additional language - 51.0 per cent of pupils with English as their first language achieved 5 or more A*-C grade GCSEs or equivalent including English and mathematics compared to 47.7 per cent for pupils for whom English is an additional language.
  • 54.2 of pupils not eligible for free school meals achieved 5 or more A*-C grade GCSEs or equivalent including English and mathematics compared to 26.6 per cent of pupils known to be eligible for free school meals - an attainment gap of 27.6 percentage points.
  • For all pupils with SEN, 16.5 per cent achieved 5 or more A*-C grade GCSEs or equivalent including English and mathematics. This compares to 61.3 per cent for pupils with no identified SEN, an attainment gap of 44.8 percentage points.
