DfE: Key Stage 2 Attainment by Pupil Characteristics, in England 2009/10 (provisional)
| Description | This Statistical First Release (SFR) provides provisional 2009/10 information on attainment by different pupil characteristics, specifically gender, ethnicity, eligibility for free school meals (FSM), special educational needs (SEN), English as a first language and Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI), at national and LA level.- In 2010, 73.5 per cent of pupils attained level 4 or higher, the expected level, in English and maths combined compared with 72.0 per cent in 2009. This increase has been replicated, to a greater and lesser extent, across many of the characteristics.
- Girls continue to outperform boys at Key Stage 2 in English, 85.0 per cent of girls achieve the expected level compared to 75.8 per cent of boys.
- Pupils of Chinese origin remain the highest achieving ethnic group. The proportion of pupils in the Chinese category achieving at least the expected level in both English and mathematics is now 84.8 per cent.
- 69.1 per cent of pupils for whom English is not their first language achieved the expected level in both English and mathematics. Compared with 74.3 per cent of pupils for whom it is.
- 55.8 per cent of pupils known to be eligible for free school meals achieved the expected level in both English and mathematics compared with 77.1 per cent of those who were not known to be eligible. The gap is larger in English than it is in Mathematics.
- The proportion of pupils with SEN without a statement who reached the expected level in both English and mathematics has risen from 33.9 per cent in 2009 to 36.6 per cent in 2010. The proportion of pupils with a statement who achieved the expected level in English and mathematics has changed little from last year.
- Pupils resident in the least deprived areas, as defined by the Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI), continue to outperform pupils resident in the most deprived areas.
