DfE: PE and Sport Survey 2009/10
| Description | This official statistics publication reports the percentage of pupils participating in at least 120 minutes of curriculum PE, as measured by the annual PE and Sport Survey (undertaken by TNS-BMRB on behalf of the Department for Education). Data is given for the academic year 2009/10, for all Local Authorities in England.
The figures relate to the previous Government's target on PE and Sport (National Indicator 57). They are published for the first time this year as official statistics as they form part of a regular time series. At a national level, the statistical release shows that:
- Across Years 1-11, 86 per cent of pupils participated in at least 120 minutes of curriculum PE each week, compared with 81 per cent in 2008/09.
- Across Years 1-13, 82 per cent of pupils participated in at least 120 minutes of curriculum PE each week, compared with 77 per cent in 2008/09.
- Data was collected by gender for the first time in 2009/10, which showed that 81 per cent of girls and 84 per cent of boys in Years 1-13 participated in at least 120 minutes of curriculum PE each week.
- Figures show that across the primary years, i.e. Years 1-6, the majority of children are participating in at least 120 minutes of curriculum PE (93 per cent of Years 1-2 and 95 per cent of Years 3-6); however, on entry to secondary school, a difference begins to emerge, with a decrease in the numbers participating becoming clearly evident (87 per cent of pupils in Years 7-9; 64 per cent in Years 10-11, dropping to 23 per cent in Years 12-13). When compared to 2008/09, figures for Years 1-9 are similar: 90 per cent of Years 1-2, 93 per cent of Years 3-6, and 85 per cent of Years 7-9 participated in 120 minutes of curriculum PE in 2008/09. For Years 10-13, improvements can be seen: in 2008/09, 45 per cent of pupils in Years 10-11 and 8 per cent of pupils in Years 12-13 were participating in 120 minutes of curriculum PE.
The report also contains figures for each Local Authority.
