BIS: Higher Education Statistics for the UK 2007/08

DescriptionThe latest national statistics on Higher Education Statistics for the United Kingdom 2007/08, produced by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) in collaboration with statisticians from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG), the Scottish Government (SG), and the Department for Employment and Learning Northern Ireland (DELNI), were released on 24 September 2009, according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

This publication presents an overview of all aspects of higher education in the UK and contains data for England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the UK. It draws together data on students, staff, institutional finance, applicants via UCAS, graduates and graduate destinations, student support and international comparisons.

These latest statistics update the previous edition which was published on 25 September 2008.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There were 2,306,105 higher education students studying at UK HE institutions in 2007/08;
  • There were 155,340 higher education students studying at Further Education institutions;
  • 196,640 HE level students were studying wholly overseas for qualifications from UK institutions;
  • 676,460 students obtained HE qualifications from UK higher education institutions;
  • The sector had a total income of £23.4bn;
  • 372,455 staff (excluding 'atypical') were working at UK HE institutions, of which 174,945 were academic staff;
  • A further 84,560 academic staff were classed as 'atypical';
  • There were 588,690 UCAS applicants for 2008 entry, of which 77.6% (456,625) were accepted.
