Regulations have been revoked to formally remove the requirement for local authorities to set targets following the announcement made on 4 November 2010. This means that the 2011 targets were the last that local authorities were required to set. This move will reduce bureaucracy for local authorities and allow them to focus on their own key priorities.
Additionally, as announced in the Schools White Paper (24 November 2010), the Government believes that schools should have the freedom to set their own priorities and be in control of their own improvement. The centrally-driven statutory process of target setting will therefore end, with the 2012 targets being the last that schools are required to set. The regulations will be revoked in due course, followed by removal of the relevant legislation.
Any comments on this change are welcome and can be emailed to the target setting team at the Department for Education by 21 March 2011.
