We have been made aware that there are scam emails in circulation which fraudulently bear the Department's name. These scam emails attempt to get teachers from overseas to send personal details or documents to bogus addresses purporting to be the UK Immigration Service or an organisation called the British English Institutes.

The titles of these emails vary, but are known to include ‘ESL teaching appointment approval' and ‘re: Employment offer letter’. These emails have not been sent by the Government or ministers, and do not contain legitimate offers of employment. They are attempts to elicit information or money by deception, and you should not respond to them, nor provide any personal or payment information.

The Department will never send out unsolicited requests asking you to disclose personal or payment information by email, and the Department does not have any direct role in offering employment to teachers from overseas.

All genuine emails from the Department will come from a '.gsi.gov.uk' domain, so if you receive a message from an email address that uses a different domain, you can be sure that it has not been sent by the Department.

Any scam emails which DfE receives a copy of are notified to the ActionFraud service established by the National Fraud Authority (NFA). Emails received by Action Fraud are forwarded to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau run by the City of London Police for collation and analysis. This enables crucial, wider intelligence to be gathered and action taken to disrupt the fraudsters' operations.
