These special educational needs and disability resources are for induction mentors and NQTs. The taught sessions aim to extend NQTs' knowledge and understanding of special educational needs (SEN) and disability, building on their initial training.
In particular, the materials are designed to:
- develop NQTs' knowledge and understanding of SEN and disability issues and practice in a range of contexts
- help them become critical and independent learners in exploring the approaches and resources for supporting pupils with more frequently met SEN and disabilities
- help them establish and maintain partnerships with pupils, their parents/carers and other professionals.
There are nine taught sessions that consider provision for pupils with SEN and/or disabilities − each session has a particular focus and are designed to be delivered by appropriately skilled school and local authority staff. They include handouts and PowerPoint presentations.
- Taught session one: Inclusion and Every Child Matters
- Taught session two: ICT and SEN and disability
- Taught session three: Removing barriers: moderate learning difficulties (MLD)
- Taught session four: Removing barriers: dyslexia and specific learning difficulties
- Taught session five: Removing barriers: behavioural, emotional and social difficulties (BESD)
- Taught session six: Removing barriers: speech, language and communication needs
- Taught session seven: Removing barriers: autistic spectrum disorders
- Taught session eight: Working with colleagues in school
- Taught session nine: Working with parents and carers
NQTs may also wish to use the subject booklets produced by the former TDA for PGCE/one-year ITT programmes. The booklets cover a range of curriculum subjects with versions for both primary and secondary teachers. Each booklet is designed to help teachers plan and teach inclusive lessons in their subject for pupils with SEN and/or disabilities.
