Eligibility

Applicants for initial teacher training (ITT) courses which begin in 2013/14 and beyond are required to have passed the skills tests before the start of the course. Applicants can register for the skills tests now to book appointments, in advance, for a date by which they expect to have submitted their application. Please check the opening dates for the submission of applications to your chosen route before booking a test.

ITT providers will use skills tests results to inform their decisions so applicants are strongly advised to take the tests as soon as possible after submitting an application.

Students already on ITT courses, as well as those in the 2012/13 academic cohort, are eligible to take the tests once the course has started. Previously, trainee teachers were unable to take them until their final year of study but this requirement was removed from 1 September 2012.   Current students are encouraged to take the skills tests as soon as possible.dfsdfsdfsdfsdfsdfsdfCurrent students are encouraged to take the skills tests as soon as possible.Current students are encouraged to take the skills tests as soon as possible. Current students are encouraged to take the skills tests as soon as possible. Current students are encouraged to take the skills tests as soon as possible.

Applicants for Assessment Only (AO) programmes which began in 2012/13 and beyond are required to have passed the skills tests before they start training. However, due to the release date of the tests, those starting an AO programme before January 2013 may complete the tests whilst being assessed, if they are unable to secure appointments before they begin; these AO candidates must have passed the skills tests before the end of their assessment period.

Registration requirements

  • ITT students already on courses will need their TRN, which is issued to ITT providers within 28 days of the start of the course.
  • New applicants do not need a reference number or TRN to register; you can register before you apply. You must take the tests after you have applied and you will need to provide evidence of your application when you attend the test centre.
  • All candidates will be asked to provide their personal details, which should match exactly the details in their application form and the ID they will use when attending the test centre. If the details do not match, candidates may not be permitted to take the test and their chosen provider may be unable to verify their test results.
  • All correspondence will be sent by email so it is essential that a valid email address is registered. To prevent correspondence going into junk folders, please add the email address on this page to your contact list.
