Book a test to be taken on or after 1 December 2014

From Wednesday 1 October 2014, learndirect will begin taking bookings for tests to be taken on or after 1 December. Further details on how to do this will be published here soon.

Practice tests

You can access practice tests via the Literacy skills tests and Numeracy skills tests pages. Updated practice tests that reflect the look and feel of the new test delivery system will be available from 1 October 2014.

Applicants for initial teacher training (ITT) are required to have passed the skills tests before the start of the course. Applicants for courses that begin in academic year 2014/15 can now book to take the skills tests.

ITT providers will use skills tests results to inform their decisions so applicants are strongly advised to prepare thoroughly for their tests prior to taking them.

Trainees who started their training prior to 1 July 2013 need to pass the tests before they can be recommended for the award of qualified teacher status (QTS). Tests can be taken at any time during the course.

Applicants for Assessment Only (AO) programmes are required to have passed the skills tests before starting the AO route.

A quick step process for taking your skills tests is detailed below.

Registration requirements

  • ITT students already on courses that started prior to 1 July 2013 will need their TRN, which is issued to ITT providers within 28 days of the start of the course.
  • New applicants do not need a reference number or TRN to register; you can register before you apply. You must take the tests after you have applied and you will need to provide evidence of your application when you attend the test centre.
  • All candidates will be asked to provide their personal details, which should match exactly the details in their application form and the ID they will use when attending the test centre. If the details do not match, candidates may not be permitted to take the test and their chosen provider may be unable to verify their test results.
  • All correspondence will be sent by email so it is essential that a valid email address is registered. To prevent correspondence going into junk folders, please add the email address on this page to your contact list.
