Sue Hackman, the Chief Adviser on School Standards, provides advice to ministers on school standards issues, developing opportunities to help schools and teachers improve standards for pupils.
The Office of the Chief Adviser includes the Effective Practice Team, who investigate why some pupils aren't progressing and test out solutions to help answer some of these issues. The team aim to help the Department reach a position where schools are informed and able to drive their own self-improvement agenda. They will:
- identify best practice in schools to be shared with other schools and officials
- provide high quality and respected expertise, covering a broad spectrum of aspects affecting development in primary, secondary and special schools
- monitor policy implementation and gather evidence to inform future policy development
- monitor innovation and development activities for future policy development
- provide direct feedback from the field on policy impact.
The resources provided in 'Reports and resources from the Chief Adviser on School Standards' are based on interviews with hundreds of teachers and pupils. The materials are designed to support schools' work in improving the progression of their pupils and can also be used flexibly to target school priorities and help with the continuous professional development of staff.
