This section sets out all of the Department for Education’s statutory guidance for schools. This is guidance issued by the Secretary of State under statutory powers or duties.

The Department is committed to cutting unnecessary bureaucratic burdens and giving schools the freedom they need to focus on what is important. Part of this is making it easier for teachers to understand how to fulfill their legal obligations and exercise their statutory powers by making our guidance and advisory content clearer and more succinct.

As such, the Department is currently reviewing all guidance for schools. Our intention is to present all statutory guidance in a standardised format that clearly sets out:

  • who the guidance is aimed at
  • the legislation it relates to
  • what it is updating or replacing
  • when the guidance will next be reviewed or will expire
  • the key points - such as what is new or has changed.

Some of the guidance in this section has already been revised into the above format. We will revise all remaining guidance in due course.

Please note: the guidance on these pages reflects the current legal position and will be updated to reflect changes stemming from the Education Act where appropriate.
