BSME was founded in 1981 and is a membership organisation of over 70 British-style schools spread across the Middle East and North Africa. BSME schools educate almost 70,000 students and employ some 5000 teachers. As an organisation dedicated to raising standards of learning in the region, BSME has developed a comprehensive set of learning-focused accreditation standards that all schools will be obliged to meet.
BSME warmly supports the Department's voluntary inspection scheme for British Schools Overseas and was pleased to contribute to its development. The combination of BSO inspection and BSME accreditation will greatly assist schools to develop their practices to the benefit of all students. Additionally, these initiatives will provide valuable information to parents and give them reassurance as to the quality of specific overseas schools in which they are interested.
Further information can be found on the BSME website.
NABSS is a membership organisation comprising over sixty schools. The Association was formed to protect schools' interests, particularly in response to changing educational legislation in Spain. While NABSS continues such work, its present influence reaches far wider. The Association organises a National Conference, which includes the agm, workshops, and a large exhibition, and provides professional development courses throughout the year. NABSS also has its own inspection and accreditation systems and works closely with the British Council.
NABSS supports the development of the new BSO inspection scheme and hopes to participate directly, building on the success of its own systems in Spain. Further information can be found on the BSME website .
FOBISSEA is a membership association of high quality British international schools in the south-east Asia and east Asian region. The schools in the federation work together to provide:
Membership is only granted to schools that meet the entry criteria which include the ability to demonstrate Britishness as defined by the federation’s constitution. Continued membership is conditional on a successful BSO inspection or accreditation through an alternative recognised body.
FOBISSEA was founded in 1984 by a group of headteachers of British schools in south-east Asia who wanted to meet in order to discuss matters of mutual interest, and to offer each other support in delivering a British-type curriculum far removed from Britain. The informal exchanges and visits between the heads of the initial six schools gradually developed into an informal federation that other schools joined and eventually to lead to the formal creation of FOBISSEA.
FOBISSEA was registered in May 2002 with the Registry of Societies (ROS) in Singapore. It currently has 38 member schools offering British-style international education to over 30,000 students in FOBISSEA schools. In February 2010, it further expanded its horizon to encompass schools in east Asia hence now being called Federation of British International Schools in South East Asia and East Asia. Today, member schools are found in South Korea, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and Brunei.
The federation is now planning further expansion so that it is able to represent British education throughout Asia and not just in our closely defined geographical region. We currently have 26 more schools who have expressed an interest in joining FOBISSEA. There is a definite shift in political and economic power towards Asia and FOBISSEA is the organisation best placed to represent British education in the region.
