The phonics screening check must be administered during week commencing 18 June 2012.

Information on the structure and content of the phonics screening check is now available in sample material and can be downloaded from the associated resources on this page.

The sample material contains:

  • a set of practice words. The practice words could be used near the time of the check with the child to familiarise them with the way in which words will be presented. The practice words show how the pseudo words in the check will be illustrated with pictures of imaginary creatures.
  • a sample list of 40 words in the form of a mark sheet.

Please note: The sample list of 40 words is designed to help teachers familiarise themselves with the phonics screening check, and consider whether their children are on course to learn the type of phonics knowledge included in the check this year. It is not intended to be used as practice material for children.

The Assessment and reporting arrangements (ARA) for the Year 1 phonics screening check can be downloaded from the associated resources on this page.

The Assessment framework for the development of the Year 1 phonics screening check is also available to download from this page. This document sets out the specification for the development of the phonics screening check for 2012 and beyond.
