The phonics screening check took place for the first time between 18 and 22 June 2012. The national results were announced on 27 September.
Teachers should make sure that extra support is in place for pupils who did not meet the expected standard so they can catch up with their peers as quickly as possible.
The advice is intended for Reception and Key Stage 1 teachers, to help them respond to the results of the phonics screening check. The booklet provides advice about extra support and interventions which teachers might like to consider for individual pupils who have not met the expected standard in the phonics screening check. Teachers will want to consider how their pupils responded to the different sections of the screening check and other assessment information when deciding what type of support to put in place.
Depending on the results of their pupils, teachers may also want to review their approach to whole class phonics teaching. This resource suggests areas teachers might like to consider, for example in relation to the pace of their phonics teaching and the approach their pupils adopt when they try to decode unknown words. This booklet also contains information from schools which teach phonics well, and advice about how the results from the check could be presented to parents.
