General article http://www.education.gov.uk/a0073580/expectations-of-ofqual 2012-04-26T15:07:28 Expectations of Ofqual Expectations of Ofqual Download Nick Gibb and John Hayes' letters to Ofqual in which they set out their expectations of how Ofqual will carry out its responsibilities as regulator of the qualifications market. <![CDATA[ Correspondence between ministers and the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) about its role as regulator of the qualifications market is available to download in the associated resources section on this page. <h1> Schools White Paper</h1> Ofqual regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England and vocational qualifications in Northern Ireland. This includes GCSEs and A Levels.   The Schools White Paper – ‘The Importance of Teaching’ – published in November 2010 confirmed that Ofqual will be asked to place greater emphasis on comparisons against the most rigorous exams systems across the world and to play its part in reform of GCSEs and A Levels. As part of this the Government is to legislate to change Ofqual’s objectives so that international comparisons play a key role in exam development and exam standards can be increased to keep pace with those of our competitors. Legislation will also make the Chief Executive of Ofqual the Chief Regulator in order to create a single figurehead within Ofqual who is able to act as the guardian of standards.   Links to the relevant correspondence between Ofqual and the Department which expands on Ministers’ expectations of the work they want taken forward are available to download on the right-hand side of this page.
