Review of teachers' standards - first report

The first report of the review was published on 14 July 2011. It set out recommendations for standards to replace those required to achieve Qualified Teacher Status, and to pass induction (core).

Ministers accepted the review’s recommendations. A new set of standards called the Teachers' Standards became effective on 1 September 2012.

Review of teachers’ standards – second report

The second and final report was published 12 December 2011. It set out a recommendation to discontinue the three existing Post-Threshold, Excellent Teacher and Advanced Skills Teacher standards and made five recommendations about introducing a single higher-level standard called the Master Teacher standard. The Master Teacher standard builds on the new teachers’ standards. The report made a further observation that in the review group’s view it did not expect the Master Teacher standard to be pay related.
