Research and evidence plays a fundamental role in improving children’s online safety and is crucial in informing the work of UKCCIS.
Two recent, large scale studies capture the views of young people and parents about internet safety:
- the EC Safer Internet Programme’s EU Kids Online II examines children’s and parents’ experiences with internet use, risk and safety;
- Ofcom’s research on Children's and Parents' Media Literacy provides annual updates on the media use, attitudes and understanding among children and young people aged 5-15.
The UKCCIS Evidence Group, led by Evidence Champion Professor Sonia Livingstone of the London School of Economics, has prepared a series of research highlights to summarise the findings of these and other recent UK research, including findings on:
- Children’s use of the internet
- Parental attitudes
- Policing online child sexual images
- Social networking
- European findings on risks and safety for children
