Consultation on the procedure for accreditation as a provider of initial teacher training

The Agency's role in accreditation stems from the Teachers' Qualification Regulations. These define an institution accredited to provide initial teacher training (ITT) as one "… accredited by the TTA as a provider of courses satisfying such provisions as to curricula and other criteria as may, from time to time be specified by the Secretary of State". Almost all providers accredited since the Agency came into being in 1994 have been school-based consortia. The accreditation of these consortia has been an effective way of achieving greater involvement of schools in ITT but has not resulted in better quality provision. Increasingly, new proposals are for provision that has little that distinguishes it from what is already on offer.
