Lottery Funding For Children's Play

In October 2002 the Government announced a review of children's play opportunities to inform a proposed lottery funding programme. The review will run until Spring 2003 and is jointly sponsored by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and Sure Start (DfES/DWP), who are working closely with the New Opportunities Fund (NOF) and other Government Departments. The aim of the review is to produce a strategy and priorities that can be used to inform the proposed programme. The programme will be UK wide and cover children with limited play opportunities. The main funding for this programme is planned to come on stream in late 2005. The consultation stage of the review is now complete. A final play review will be published in the summer setting out the findings and a strategy for allocating the money for play. Details of how to obtain a copy of the review report will be posted here as soon as they are available. Further news will appear in the trade press, including Play Today, a free bi-monthly newspaper with news and features on play, produced by the Children's Play Council with funding from DCMS. If you wish to subscribe to Play Today you can do so by e-mailing your details to or writing to 8 Wakley Street, London EC1V 7QE.
