In September 2011, the Deputy Prime Minister announced that £50 million would be made available for a summer schools programme. The main purpose of this initiative is to help disadvantaged pupils, specifically those eligible for free school meals and those looked after continuously for more than six months by the local authority, to make a successful transition from primary to secondary school.
This overview report presents the findings of a mixed method research study undertaken by the NFER and Ecorys. It was commissioned by the department to evaluate the implementation and early outcomes of their 2012 Summer Schools programme for disadvantaged pupils.
